The pub at the hub of the village – Hereford Times

THE Pandy Inn at Dorstone was named the Best Community Pub.

James Aubrey and Lisa Aubrey-Cosslett collected their award from Jason Hughes of the Wobbly Brewing Company, who sponsored this award.

Runners-up were The Temple Bar Inn in Ewyas Harold and De Koffie Pot in Hereford.

Lisa Aubrey-Cosslett from The Pandy Inn said: “We hadn’t expected it at all. It is all down to our team.

“There are about 11 people working with us altogether. We have been there for three years.

“It has taken a while to get the community back. I feel like we have now.

“We were very lucky that we had a great team from the beginning.

“It is all down to the locals and to the people who work there.”

They stock Wye Valley Butty Bach as a permanent beer. They also stock a Grey Trees ale, which is a small brewery in Aberdare.

They also have Gwatkin cider on tap and in bottles, as well as Sly gin; Chase gin and vodka; and Fair Oak cider.

They also have a guest pump from which they have sold beers from Glamorgan Brewery, Bespoke Brewery and Swan Brewery.

Lisa said: “ Our staff are well versed in the products we sell. They try new products so that they are able to inform and advise our customers.”

They host harvest auctions for the church, meetings for the village hall committee, the church committee and the playing fields committee.

They supply raffle prizes for all of the above, the local bowls club and local schools.

The pub hosted a Lebanese food fundraising evening for the local pre-school which raised more than £1,000.

Lisa added: “We offer a place where people can meet and be themselves.

“We welcome families, singletons, people with dogs…everyone.

“Our pub is a traditional pub where there is always someone to talk to. We offer companionship for those that are alone.

“We offer a friendly smile and a genuine welcome. We offer a shoulder to cry on and support when needed.

“We cater to our community – the elderly, young families, young adults. This means we don’t have music playing so everyone can join in with the conversation at the bar. We have free wi-fi for our customers. We employ only local people, as we feel it is important to support those near to us.”
